Wordless Wednesday | Provisioning On A Sailboat






Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo(s) without any words. But, I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:

1 - Provisioning is my favorite boat project. After all, what's not to like about stocking your boat up with food and drink?

2 - We squirrel stuff away in cubbyholes underneath and behind the "furniture" on our boat. 

3 - Lots of cans - mostly of tomatoes, corn, fruit, beans and the like. As well as some beer. Probably not enough beer though. We'll see. 

4 - Our goal is to only buy fresh stuff in the Bahamas like eggs, milk, cheese, meat, vegies etc. and mostly live off of our food stores.

    I'm guessing Yuengling is your favorite beer?

    1. It's not so much that Yuengling is my favorite beer as much as it's my favorite, less expensive domestic beer which comes in a can.

      No idea what I'm going to do with the squash :-)

  2. -We don't lay in food like this. We do make sure we have enough cold adult beverages. We tend to eat out if we're traveling. When we just go to the boat for a weekend we take up each meal with us. There is much though in making sure you have everything you need for the trip you plan. Boaters all know this very well.

    Hope you have plenty of beer.

  3. I really like to provision as well and I love the fact that we're able to live independently for months at a time . . . so does our credit card.

  4. Buying items in the Bahamas. In reading several cruiser blogs, more recently Gone with the Wynns, it seems meat and cheese prices in the Bahamas are very high almost prohibitive. Ever consider investing in a 12v portable freezer eg Engel to stock up on cheese and meat in US via Costco or supermarket? Could save 30-40% of the cost of the Engel on a long trip in Bahamas .

    1. Actually, you can get cheese in the Bahamas which isn't too expensive. I think it's subsidized. Of course, it's not gourmet cheese, but we liked it well enough last time we were here. You can also find chicken and pork at reasonable prices, reasonable by Bahamian standards that is :-) We also just bought a 1 lb of ground beef in Marsh Harbour for $5 which we didn't think was too mad. I'd love to get one of those Engel freezers, but unfortunately we don't have the space for it :-(

  7. Mike makes fun of me because I am always provisioning. Why wait? I say. Today I brought home a case of diced tomatoes in juice. i'll find a place for them. Honestly, we have so much food on our boat that we are ready to go right now and could stay out for at least two months. I'm working on making that 3.In a moment of weakness today I bought two packages of ginger cookie mix. Ooops. How did those get into my cart??

    1. You can never have too many cans of tomatoes in my books. And of course ginger cookie mix is a pantry essential :-)

  8. Very organized! The feeling of being self-contained is very rewarding! And, after a few weeks, you get creative, which also boosts the level of independence.

    1. I've had to get quite creative lately since we're trying to minimize what we cook on the stove (we're having to use a butane one just now). It's amazing how you manage to make things work with what you have.

  11. Nice beer stash! One thought, which you probably already know, but...
    If there's any chance of salt water touching those cans, be careful of corrosion weakening the aluminum. It can happen amazingly fast, and you don't want to loose any beer!
