February In Numbers

Clockwise from upper left: (1) Baking bread using one of the recipes from "The Boat Galley" cookbook; (2) The insides of a winch; (3) Provisioning at Aldi's; (4) Replacing the freshwater pump; (5) Doing sewing projects under the watchful eye of a wee beastie; and (6) Fun with friends on board Tickety Boo.

It's time for the monthly recap in numbers - an assortment of odd tidbits and random thoughts that popped into my head when I was reflecting back on the month. Just like the previous month, February was all about boat projects and getting ready to head to the Bahamas. We can almost see the finish line and hopefully we'll be on our way soon. Fingers crossed nothing else breaks before then.

1 - Number of loaves of bread I baked. It's been ages since I've baked bread and I'm trying to get back in the swing of things considering a loaf costs nearly $6 in the Bahamas.

25 - The number of breakfast burritos Scott ate. It's his favorite breakfast. Two scrambled eggs with jalapenos, maybe some bell pepper and onion, a little bit of cheese and some salsa, all wrapped up in a tortilla.

5 - Number of packages of tortillas we have on board. Plus flour so I can make more once we run out. Packaged tortillas have a long shelf life, which is great when it comes to provisioning for an extended cruise.

2 - Number of times I made pancakes. One of my favorite breakfasts.

5 - Number of times we ate out or got takeaway.

$10 - How much we put into a pool at a Superbowl party.

$0 - How much we won.

2 - How many winches we serviced (they're the contraptions that you wrap your lines around to pull in the sails). We each did one. It involved taking them apart, cleaning the old grease out of them (they were gunky), relubricating them and putting them back together.

1 - Number of days off we had from boat projects. It was chucking down rain and we lazed about.

4 - Number of dogs I've seen running around off-leash at the marina lately. It's a topic of some debate here - should well-behaved dogs be allowed to run around off-leash? Cats do, why can't dogs? What do you think?

2 - Number of friends who just completely changed their cruising plans. We had assumed we'd see them again this year. Now we probably won't. That's the nature of cruising and RVing - you have to say goodbye to friends along the way.

  1. Wow! How did it get to be March? 25 burritos! Will you be making those with dehydrated veggies?
We always keep our dog leashed: in Florida due to alligators, crocodiles, cars, other humans that don't want to be approached, and other dogs that may play too hard. Cats seem to be more street smart than dogs. I keep Hastings on a tight leash in the Bahamas as there is a lot of trash everywhere that he wants to eat and forays into the bushes result in 100s of stickers in his feet. I'd love it if dogs could roam free, but it usually doesn't work out for us!

    1. I do have some of the dehydrated bell peppers and onions which will try out once our fresh supply runs out.

  2. This March, I'm looking forward to spring and wondering why we didn't go camping again because it's really cold and wet here in the PNW -- brrrr!

    1. It's cold and wet days in the PNW that makes one wonder why they don't live in the south. But then the flowers bloom and you remember that all of that rain is what makes it so beautiful there. I do miss it at times.

  3. I love your husbands breakfast. I would love to have that too. Not that often, but often.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  4. As long as those dogs don't come on your ship to take a dump...
I could go for a breakfast like Scott's. Number of times in a month I'd have to make it though - just four. All Saturdays.

    1. Sounds like you've got a good set-up in your household :-)

  5. Home-made bread, tortillas, pancakes? Your boat is sounding better all the time! Ever try to put a cat on a leash? They either flop down like they're dead or decide you're a tree and climb you -- with all claws out. Plus, how many people have you heard of being killed by a cat? So that's why it's leashes for dogs not cats. In March I wish a miracle would happen and I'd finish the 1st draft of my book. At my current pace, more likely end of April. *sigh*

    1. I've got some friends with a cat they put on a leash and that's exactly what she does - walk for a while and then plop down and stare at you :-)

  6. Freshly. Asked bread and breakfast burritos - mmm, sorry, what else did you say?

  7. Cleaning winches was never my favorite. Glad you only had to do 2. I was always happy to have it done...but seemed to be a time-consuming task!

    1. While it took a while, it wasn't actually that bad of a boat project. I can think of worse :-)

  8. Sounds like a great February. You said Scott loves breakfast burrito, we do something similar and that is whip an egg and then pour it into a pan like you are going to make an omelet when nearly cooked flip it and put some cheese on it, with a slice of ham and some salsa when melted put it on a tortilla and wrap. It's delicious too! :-)

Dogs running loose, that is something that we have had to deal with at the park and the problem is that most dogs are well behaved but not everyone likes dogs so when they see one coming running up to them they get frightened and when people with ill-behaved dogs see this then they think they have the right to let their dog go loose. Unfortunately rules need to be follow even for good dogs. :-( Sounds like they need a doggie park at the marina.

    1. That sounds delish! There is an area where the dogs can run off-leash, but some of them are off-leash all of the time. Most of them are really good dogs so I don't mind, but I know that others do.

  9. Winches are tedious to take apart and put back together. Good practice! I see there is a lot of talk about food. Making your own tortillas is tedious as well, but I think you will be fine for a while, since they are readily available everywhere and I don't remember them being that expensive. Does Scott prefer flour or corn tortillas? Well-behaved dogs that can be restraint vocally should be allowed off leash. Some people just hate that thought, though, even when the dogs don't cause any harm or annoyance. March is not starting great, but that means it should improve...

    1. Sometimes I'm surprised that I'm not 500 lbs because food is all I talk about :-) I used to make tortillas on our boat in New Zealand. It was okay, but did take a while as you have to cook each one individually. We usually get flour tortillas at the store, but corn ones are nice too for a change. Hope your March gets better.

  11. I used to make sourdough bread when we lived aboard.Got the recipe from Sourdough Cookery by Rita Davenport. Probably out of print now, but you might be able to find one on the Internet. Mine was published by Bantam Books.

    1. I love sourdough bread! Such a good idea. I'll have to look into it. If I remember correctly the starter is the trickiest bit.

  12. Twenty-five breakfast burritos is impressive! Actually, I'm also impressed that you made your own loaf of bread.

  13. That's a whole lot of burritos! I usually never bother to make anything that involves cooking or preparation for breakfast - I just grab a bowl of cereal. Did you celebrate Pancake Day? As long as the dogs behave themselves and the owners keep a close eye on them, I don't have a problem with off-lead - but not everyone likes it. Wish I could do it with ours, but two out of the five would scarper and get themselves into mischief while the other three would be fine - can't let some off and not the others, though!

    1. No, we didn't celebrate Pancake Day, but we should have. British pancakes are different than ours if I remember correctly. More like crepes.

  14. I could eat that breakfast, minus the tortilla, every day. Delicious! February was a blur around here. March is looking to be the same. Number of boat projects that are ongoing: infinity.
